30/08/07 Missing Cat is Found

One of our cats, one that we acquired when a neighbour moved away and left him (we even acquired a dog in exactly the same way, not that unusual in Spain) went missing a week ago.
We always keep our cats shut in at night because we were told very early on that foxes will get them in otherwise, but one evening this particular cat was not to be seen at feeding time, something that had never happened before.

We did of course look everywhere and called for him but with no luck. After speaking to a friend and being told how their cat had been locked in somewhere by a neighbour for several days, we thought back to consider similar possibilities.

We don't really have any neighbours here but the small house that used to be occupied by the cats previous owners, situated about 300m away has been empty for 2 years and is on the market.
We were out on the morning he went missing and it was possible that the estate agent brought someone out that day and accidentally locked the cat inside the house.
We of course looked round the house and called (this cat would undoubtedly reply and could make quite a noise) but no sign of him.

Today, a whole week after the cat went missing, my wife again went to that house and called, and, luckily she just herd a faint noise, which might have been a cat, not coming from the house but from somewhere else.
There is an old stable, that been converted to enclosed shed, at the end of the land accompanying the house (a further 150m way) and sound was tracked down to there.
We had completely forgotten about the existence of this shed, and it was padlocked. There was however and opening in the blockwork wall, covered by a piece of wire netting which was easily dislodged. Once the netting was dislodged, the cat (Casber was the name we had given him) was soon encouraged to make the jump required to join us in the outside world, and apparently noe the worse for his ordeal.

We had of course over the last week but it was possibly one of our dogs who had missed him the most, and we all enjoyed seeing them back together again.
