One of the most enjoyable activities connected with the vegetable garden must be to pick a melon and eat it fresh, and they are easy are to grow.
There are of course several quite differnt types of melons that you can grow - infact it is worth growing more than one type if you have the space.
In our opinion, those most worth growing are water melon (shown growing in the picture below) and Piel de Sapo (the green rugby ball shaped melons). The latter, we have found to be very practical as they do not get over-ripe too quickly.
Canteloup melons, while very sweet, need to be picked at a fairly precise moment.
Seed should be sown in the spring under polythene and planted out April to May when there is no risk of a frost or cold winds. If you don't want to grow your own plants from seed, you should be able to buy plants.
Plant out around 1m apart in soil that has had manure incorporated.
