Parsnip - Chirivia

Not an easy crop to grow but is one of the few vegetables with real taste, either to have with your Christmas roast or to add flavour to a vegetable casserole.

Parsnips are difficult to grow because they are slow to germinate - I find that they take around 3 weeks. That in itself needn't be too much of a problem but it is a long time to keep the soil moist. They may need watering two or three times per day.

Once established, they are not much of a problem and can stay in the ground through the winter until required.
Parsnips supposedly have a better flavour after they have had a frost on them, but that may be difficult to achieve!
